Summary

A female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them—setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course

Rule #1: The poison must never be used to harm another woman。

Rule #2: The names of the murderer and her victim must be recorded in the apothecary’s register。

One cold February evening in 1791, at the back of a dark London alley in a hidden apothecary shop, Nella awaits her newest customer。 Once a respected healer, Nella now uses her knowledge for a darker purpose—selling well-disguised poisons to desperate women who would kill to be free of the men in their lives。 But when her new patron turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, an unexpected friendship sets in motion a string of events that jeopardizes Nella’s world and threatens to expose the many women whose names are written in her register。

In present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, reeling from the discovery of her husband’s infidelity。 When she finds an old apothecary vial near the river Thames, she can’t resist investigating, only to realize she’s found a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that haunted London over two centuries ago。 As she deepens her search, Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive。

It started out being a little confusing, but then I started to love it! In the end I loved it!!

Quick read, dual timeline (the events in the past are more interesting than the ones in the present), creative idea。 I liked it, and it was easy to read and fun to imagine, although it is full of coincidences and has a neatly wrapped up ending, which is unrealistic historically but very satisfying for fiction。 So I’d recommend it but I do think it will become forgettable fairly quickly。

The past timeline was way more interesting than the present one。 It brought the pacing down every time it cut back to present, where the protagonist keeps moaning about her awful controlling husband。 Nella and Eliza were actually interesting characters, but every time their story started really getting good it would cut back to Caroline, an amateur historian finding herself by unraveling the mystery of what happened in the past timeline。 For what's supposed to be a feminist mystery, it sure spen The past timeline was way more interesting than the present one。 It brought the pacing down every time it cut back to present, where the protagonist keeps moaning about her awful controlling husband。 Nella and Eliza were actually interesting characters, but every time their story started really getting good it would cut back to Caroline, an amateur historian finding herself by unraveling the mystery of what happened in the past timeline。 For what's supposed to be a feminist mystery, it sure spends a lot of time on women bellyaching about their barren wombs or whatever。。。even in the present timeline。 Three different characters! So weird。 。。。more

I found the book interesting, particularly the setting in both time periods。 Would have preferred a bit more backstory on Caroline's marriage and life。 I found the book interesting, particularly the setting in both time periods。 Would have preferred a bit more backstory on Caroline's marriage and life。 。。。more

It almost seems like a YA book。 We go from the 1700's to current day。 The apothacary that was used to "get rid" of husbands or lovers with poisons。 Then something goes wrong。 The woman is found to be guilty of killing Lord Clarence。 Current day- she finds a bottle with a bear on it。 It begins a mystery of who what and where。 It almost seems like a YA book。 We go from the 1700's to current day。 The apothacary that was used to "get rid" of husbands or lovers with poisons。 Then something goes wrong。 The woman is found to be guilty of killing Lord Clarence。 Current day- she finds a bottle with a bear on it。 It begins a mystery of who what and where。 。。。more

As soon as I saw the cover of The Lost Apothecary I figured I would enjoy it。 I know we aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but honestly an aesthetically pleasing cover always helps catch your eye in a local bookstore! Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and now have the strongest urge to pop over to the UK for some mudlarking :) 。。。more

Interesting story。 Probably would say 3。5 stars but rounded to 4。

This is another book that found its way into my life with little help from me, and though I was rather indifferent at first I quickly found myself drawn to and caring very much about the characters。 A true page turner that I enjoyed very much。

Enjoyable read but a little slow。 I liked the 3 different perspectives of Eliza, Nella, and Caroline but would have liked to see a stronger plot。 There wasn’t enough emotion shown from any of the characters even though there were a lot of life altering things that happened to each person。

I settled on The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner when I needed something to listen to on a long driving day last week。 I had seen the book advertised on Instagram and the plot had caught my eye so I went for it。 The story had me hooked。 And the modern day narrator, Caroline, (the book goes between 3 female narrators, 2 in the 1700’s [Nella and Eliza] and 1 in the present day) had me relating to her on almost every level。 In fact her love of history and the sort of lost feeling she has about havi I settled on The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner when I needed something to listen to on a long driving day last week。 I had seen the book advertised on Instagram and the plot had caught my eye so I went for it。 The story had me hooked。 And the modern day narrator, Caroline, (the book goes between 3 female narrators, 2 in the 1700’s [Nella and Eliza] and 1 in the present day) had me relating to her on almost every level。 In fact her love of history and the sort of lost feeling she has about having a history degree but not actually applying it to her current work career makes me feel called out。 Every time she talks about why she loves history I just think that’s exactly how I feel。 Every time she mentions finding a job to help make a living but not doing a job she loves just for the money because she could find a job that would allow her to use her history degree, I think omg that is me。 The only difference between us is our current relationships and family life。The Lost Apothecary plot had me interested from start to finish。 Sarah Penner employed a great technique in ending her chapters in little Cliff hangers before switching to the next narrator。 It left me wanting more。 Even at the end of the book I wanted more。 However there is one event at the end of the book I did not agree with。 And can’t believe was done。 I would highly recommend this book to anyone willing to listen。 Though you may enjoy it more if you have an interest in the past。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book! I liked the format flashing back and forth in time。 The writing kept me wanting to read more。 The main protagonist got on my nerves at times with her secrets, but overall good read。

An interesting look into late 18th century England that I was unaware of。 From Carrie Underwood's "Two Black Cadillacs" to Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder and Lead", woman have long dreamed of exacting revenge on cheating spouses。 Nella worked with her mother in an apothecary, preparing herbal medicines for a wide variety of ailments。 But, due to the cruelty of her lover, Nella becomes more sinister in her herbal concoctions。 The book alternates between Nella and her young helper in the 1790's to p An interesting look into late 18th century England that I was unaware of。 From Carrie Underwood's "Two Black Cadillacs" to Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder and Lead", woman have long dreamed of exacting revenge on cheating spouses。 Nella worked with her mother in an apothecary, preparing herbal medicines for a wide variety of ailments。 But, due to the cruelty of her lover, Nella becomes more sinister in her herbal concoctions。 The book alternates between Nella and her young helper in the 1790's to present day London with Caroline (also betrayed by her husband) and her new friend Gaynor who works doing historical research at the British Library。 Caroline's husband arrives in London unexpectedly to try to work things out。 I can't give away more of the story, except to say that Carolyn and Gaynor are trying to unravel a 220-year old mystery about a hidden room in an apothecary shop。。。。。。and things get pretty scary for Caroline。。。。。 。。。more

Interesting concept。 Loved the 1790 storyline, not so much the Present Day

This was a decent first novel。 It was a little slow at times, but the ending was awesome。 I enjoyed the way the story was told from three different points of view at two separate points in time。 The characters were all likeable, and the premise was interesting。 I really loved the way everything came full circle in the last two chapters。 The recipes at the back of the book were fun extras, as well。 If you're thinking about reading this one, give it a go。 This was a decent first novel。 It was a little slow at times, but the ending was awesome。 I enjoyed the way the story was told from three different points of view at two separate points in time。 The characters were all likeable, and the premise was interesting。 I really loved the way everything came full circle in the last two chapters。 The recipes at the back of the book were fun extras, as well。 If you're thinking about reading this one, give it a go。 。。。more

I loved the alternating timelines。 The story was beautifully done。 The parts with the husband I thought were too dramatic for the overall story but everything else worked so well。 This story almost sounds so believable。 I would definitely recommend to those who like historical fiction or are just entering into the genre。

Katharine

Way too slow paced, and the future section is only good at the very end。 Would have been better to just stick with and write the past。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 All of this for stupid fucking James。 Sigh。This book is ok。 Not great, not bad。 The historical chapters were definitely more interesting than the present day timeline。 Caroline’s story was a bit unbelievable, with things falling into place far too neatly。 The multiple references to Caroline feeling “brave” felt like a cringey reach。

An excellent novel, fabulously intertwining the distant past and the modern now。The story showcases strong female characters who are on their way to becoming independent and following their calling and dreams。There are certain twists which you might enjoy, although the overall storyline is rather linear and foreseeable。 Nonetheless, that is not necessarily a bad thing unless one expects it。I will not read the book a second time, but today I'd recommend my past self to go ahead and read the book。 An excellent novel, fabulously intertwining the distant past and the modern now。The story showcases strong female characters who are on their way to becoming independent and following their calling and dreams。There are certain twists which you might enjoy, although the overall storyline is rather linear and foreseeable。 Nonetheless, that is not necessarily a bad thing unless one expects it。I will not read the book a second time, but today I'd recommend my past self to go ahead and read the book。 It's very enjoyable on the first read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was going to be 3 stars for me but the last two chapters totally bumped it up a star。 The beginning was a little slow for me and had a hard time connecting to Caroline and the present time storyline but she totally redeemed herself。 Eliza was by far my favorite character in this book。 What a spunky girl! So brave。 The last two chapters gave me goosebumps and hit me right in the feels。 And ps。 James is a BASTARD! The worst kind of dude。。。。

Loved the story of Nella and Eliza in the 1700s, but had a hard time believing just how coincidental Caroline's present-day story was。 Loved the story of Nella and Eliza in the 1700s, but had a hard time believing just how coincidental Caroline's present-day story was。 。。。more
